Este Homem é um Senhor

 

Um online stream, de mais de três horas, SOBRE A VIDA de Reinhold Messner, na primeira pessoa, e, como não poderia deixar de ser, sobre a Montanha e a Natureza Selvagem (Wilderness), sob diversos pontos de vista e conceitos, designadamente acerca do que é aventura, liberdade e responsabilidade. Over the years, I have learnt that on the one hand, there is human nature, deep inside us, almost like an inborn human directive that has been passed on genetically over thousands of years, from one generation to the next. And on the other hand, there is natural law, out in the wild, and we are subjected to both these laws. When two elements, Mother Nature and Human Nature come together, great things can happen. William Blake, a romantic English poet once said: “Great things are done when men and mountains meet”. At the most, we leave a track in the snow. No, the great thing happen inside of us.

 

According to local village lore, the village pastor took my great-grandfather aside to tell him that his beahaviour was unacceptable and that he need to send his sons to school and to church on Sundays. Apparently the old farmer replied: “My church” – and by that he meant the Geisler pinnacles, that tower over St. Magdalena – “is far mightier than your measly little church tower in the valley.” He was an anarchist at hearth, and I seem to have picked up some of his DNA.

 

But what fascinated me even more, was the freedom I experienced while climbing those rock walls. (…) Complete freedom and total responsability. (…) I prefer not to speak of moral values on the mountains. We carry complete responsability in the mountains. Human Nature tell us what we can do and how we can do it. If you regard ethics to be instinctive and genetically determined, then yes, I follow some kind of ethical code. But by and large, it is importante to realize that we are making an independente decision to take on a tour of this kind and we therefore carry complete responsability for it.
